Coffee and Poetry

So, you’re at the Sheaf Poetry Festival, you’ve just heard a great reading from an exceptional poet and now you really want a flat white and a chat about what you’ve just heard. But where do you go? Let me tell you…

As most of the festival’s events are based in the Sheffield Hallam Performance Lab on Arundel Gate, we’ve compiled a list of the best places to grab yourself a coffee (or a pint!) within walking distance of the festival.

Tamper Sellers Wheel
149 Arundel St, S1 2NU

Just a two minute walk from the main stage, Tamper serves the best of New Zealand in the heart of Sheffield. With top quality coffee and food to match, it’s one of our favourites.
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8am—5pm, Sat 9am—6pm, Sun 9am—4pm

46 Howard Street, S1 2LX

In the centre of Sheffield, just up from the train station is HowSt. Excellent service, coffee and brunch! It’s cosy and convenient for those of you who love poetry and coffee as much as we do here!
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8am—4pm, Sat 10am—4pm (closed Sun)

Union St Cafe
18-20 Union Street, S1 2JP

Not just your average coffee shop! This is a pop-up cafe with a different event on every day, at just 2 minute walk you can have so much! Whether you fancy pasta, curry or a brownie, Union St will offer you everything you thought you wanted and more.
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8am—4pm, Sat 10am—4pm (closed Sun)

Ambulo (Millennium Gallery)
48 Arundel Gate, S1 2PP

Recently opened and one of Sheffield’s all day cafes, Ambulo is a must. It’s attached to the Millennium Gallery, and only a 3 minute walk away. You can get a coffee, a tasty bite to eat and see some art in between events. Opened by Arctic Monkeys’ very own Matt Helders!
Opening hours: Mon-Thur 9am—9pm, Fri-Sat 9am—10pm,  Sun 9am—5pm

Zooby’s, Winter Garden
90 Surrey Street, S1 2LH

So you’ve had your coffee at Ambulo, wandered through the Gallery and now you’re in the Winter Garden. One of Sheffield’s most unique spots to sit and relax in a garden oasis, a not-so-hidden treasure. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 8.30am—5pm,  Sun 10am—5pm

Peace Gardens
50 Pinstone Street, S1 2HH

Don’t fancy sitting inside? No problem! Just exit through the Winter Garden, grab yourself a takeaway coffee and take a seat in Sheffield Peace Gardens. Find peace among the busy town centre.

22 Norfolk Row, S1 2PA

A little further away but worth the 6 minute walk. Marmadukes offer artisan coffee, home-cooked food and tasty treats! Follow the stairs for a hidden room filled with cushions and art and comfort. A great relaxing environment following a busy day of poetry.
Opening hours: Mon-Sat 9am—5pm,  Sun 10am—4pm

Steam Yard
Unit 1-2, 97, Aberdeen Court, 95-101 Division Street, S1 4GE

Recommended by many, Steam Yard is one of Sheffield’s best independent coffee shops. A huge selection of freshly baked treats and sandwiches. Though it is a 9 minute walk, their Cruffins are well worth it! Highly skilled baristas and a lovely courtyard to enjoy the sun and an iced coffee.

SHU Charles Street Cafe
133 Charles Street,  S1 2ND

Don’t want to walk too far in case you miss a reading? Don’t worry! There’s a cafe right next to you in the centre of Sheffield Hallam University Charles Street building. With a selection of coffee and snacks, it’s a great pit-stop before your next event.

Showroom Cafe Bar
15 Paternoster Row, S1 2BX

At just a 4 minute walk down the road, connected to the Showroom Cinema, opposite the SHU Hubs. Go there for a selection of coffees, cakes and maybe something a little stronger.
